A decade of dedication to Serendipity

2nd May 2025

Since 2015, Marjory Webber has been a regular, reassuring presence at one of Autism Hampshire’s Serendipity Community Groups - safe social spaces for autistic adults to connect, chat, and feel understood.

It all began when Marjory saw a volunteer advert while working at Southampton Solent University. With a background in education and psychology, and experience mentoring autistic students, the opportunity grabbed her interest.

"I was only working two days a week at the time," said Marjory, from Eastleigh. “So I thought, ‘That’s jolly interesting’ - and I signed up."

Nearly 10 years later, Marjory is still attending the group every fortnight.

"I suppose I like the routine as much as the members do," she laughed. "It goes in my diary first."

At first, she wasn’t sure what to expect. “I was very cynical,” she admitted. “I wondered, how are autistic people going to chat? But the first time I sat down with the group, I got the surprise of my life - the conversation never stopped.”

Over the years, Marjory has listened, gently guided the group when needed, helped people feel comfortable, and supported quieter members to get involved - if they want to.

“It’s not about doing a lot,” she said. “It’s about being aware, listening, and giving people space to be themselves.”

Through the group, Marjory continues to learn about autism, about people, and about herself.

“Every time we meet, I come away having learned something new - whether it’s about managing routines, dealing with anxiety, or how social media is changing things for younger autistic people. It’s fascinating.”

Now 71, Marjory remains modest about her contribution. “It’s not about being an expert,” she said. “It’s about showing up, being interested, and enjoying people’s company.”

Ten years on, her steady presence has helped shape a welcoming, supportive space where autistic people feel safe, connected, and understood. And in her own words? “It’s been an education and a joy.”
