At Autism Hampshire, we have committed to empowering people with learning disabilities and autistic individuals to exercise their right to vote.
Inspired by our colleagues at Avenues Group, we have signed up to the My Vote My Voice Charter which is already supported by dozens of charities across the UK.
What is the My Vote My Voice Charter?
The My Vote My Voice Charter aims to ensure that people with learning disabilities and autistic individuals are encouraged and supported to participate in the electoral process.
By signing up, we pledge to:
Why This Matters
According to the My Voice My Vote website, “Around 1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability, and there are over 700,000 autistic people. But research in 2019 found that less than two-thirds of the general public know that they have an equal right to vote. This needs to change.”
With a general election announced for 4 July, the aim is for more people with learning disabilities and autistic individuals to be registered and ready to vote. By raising awareness and providing the right support, we can ensure that every voice is heard and valued.
Resources Available
We encourage everyone to visit the My Vote My Voice website where you will find helpful resources on supporting voters, which are tailored for support workers, organisations, and elected individuals, www.myvotemyvoice.org.uk/supporting-voters/.
Together, we can ensure that people with learning disabilities and autistic individuals have the information and support they need to make their voices heard in the 2024 General Election.
