Autism Hampshire secures contract to continue providing vital advice service

15th April 2025

Autism Hampshire is pleased to announce that it has secured a contract to continue providing its essential Information, Advice & Guidance service for autistic adults and their families across Hampshire.

Working in partnership with Hampshire County Council, the service offers tailored support through a dedicated helpline, emails, virtual meetings, and face-to-face appointments.

Described by someone who has used the service as ‘a rare and treasured commodity’, the team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Individuals can seek advice whenever they need it - without the pressure of time limits or the risk of being discharged.

A lifeline for adults across Hampshire

The Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) service plays a crucial role in helping autistic adults and their families navigate challenges, access the right support, and make informed decisions about their lives.

By offering expert guidance in an accessible and understanding way, the service helps to empower individuals. It also helps to reduce demand on other services such as GPs, mental health teams, and emergency services.

In January and February this year, the IAG team handled more than 1,200 enquiries and supported 393 new individuals - demonstrating the high demand for this vital resource.

Cheryl Claxton, Head of Community Services at Autism Hampshire, said: "We're incredibly proud that this contract has been secured, allowing us to continue providing important support to autistic adults across Hampshire.

“The strength of our case was built on compelling evidence - both in the number of people we support and the positive impact we have on their lives.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our team and the real difference this service makes. We look forward to continuing to provide advice and guidance to those who need it most.”

Valued service

A Hampshire resident, who has sought advice from the Information, Advice & Guidance service, described how the team has helped. They said: “I am currently awaiting a right to choose autism assessment via the NHS. Autism Hampshire and my GP have supported me as I wait and as I work part-time with a supportive employer.

“In accessing information and advice, I have found them to be nurturing and thorough, seeking professional ways forward for us. Autism Hampshire is a rare and treasured commodity in the lives of autistic individuals. We are blessed to have it here.”

Another person supported by the team described the service as ‘excellent’. They said: “As someone who is not diagnosed, just being able to talk to someone who understands is extremely helpful. I now have a lot of useful advice I am starting to work through looking to help improve my overall quality of life.”

Beyond the contract

In addition to their core service, the IAG team actively engages with the wider community by attending events and offering support beyond their contracted work.

Their ongoing work ensures that more autistic adults and their families can access the help they need, when they need it.

Autism Hampshire is proud to continue delivering this essential service and remains dedicated to creating a better future for autistic people.
