3rd January 2025
We are delighted to announce Melanie Fisher, Support Manager, as Autism Hampshire’s Employee of the Month for November!
Melanie has been recognised for her exceptional dedication, leadership, and care qualities that have made a meaningful impact on both the people we support and her staff team.
In the nominations, one of her colleagues said: “Mel has gone above and beyond for the people we support and staff. She is a consistent support for all around her and nothing is too much trouble. She has fought for the people we support to ensure they get the support they deserve both within the service and from external professionals. Mel is the heart of our home and will always take time to ensure everyone feels supported.”
Another nomination said: “The most amazing, understanding and caring manager. Always listens to staff and the people we support. Mel has created a safe working space for all of her team.”
Another added: “Mel is an exceptional manager. Not only is she wonderful in her support to her staff but also in her support for the people we support. Mel works incredibly hard to make sure the people we support have everything they need and it is clear that both the staff and people we support appreciate all that she does. I can't think of anyone better to nominate!”
Melanie’s journey
Melanie has been part of Autism Hampshire for eight years, starting as a Support Worker. She later completed a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) course and became a PBS lead. Her dedication saw her take on additional responsibilities before becoming an Assistant Support Manager and, more recently, a Support Manager. In May this year, Melanie took on two additional services alongside her existing role.
Reflecting on her journey, Melanie said: "I love what I do! I always give myself hands-on time with the people we support and staff. I'd miss it if I didn’t and it keeps me in the present, in their lives and shows staff I’m willing to support them too! They support me in keeping great homes for the people we support, never ask staff to do, what you aren't willing to do yourself I say."
Before working with adults, Melanie supported children with additional needs.
She said: "I’ve always wanted to help people. I think it’s just built in. I want to give them the skills to achieve anything they want! I love seeing the results of what we do, the smiles, the achievements, no matter how big or small! The laughs and the bonds built or maintained with their families, friends and staff."
Receiving the award
"I was blown away by the nominations when I read them, sometimes we just need that acknowledgement, we can get so caught up in work and life, and feel low in ourselves at times,” she said.
“To know the staff I manage see me like that and feel supported by me, means the world to me. I thought, wow! I must have done something right for feedback like that. I feel so blessed to have the staff teams I have supporting me and the PWS. All three of my homes have amazing and dedicated staff."
Congratulations, Melanie. Your dedication and care have made a lasting impact, and this recognition is truly well deserved.
