It was disappointment all round last weekend when the much-anticipated Great South Run was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. But that didn’t stop three dedicated runners, defying all odds and running anyway!
Jenny, Laura, and Jason, all pushed through the storm and completed the distance to raise much-needed funds for Autism Hampshire.
More than £800 was donated thanks to these dedicated runners which will go towards supporting autistic people and their families in the local area.
Jenny Dadd, who raised an incredible £360, didn’t let the event's cancellation dampen her spirit. She completed 10 miles in 1 hour and 38 minutes, determined to honour her son Lewis and give back to Autism Hampshire.
Jenny said: “I was so gutted the Great South Run was cancelled! I did however still complete the run and raised £360 which I’m so proud of and hope it helps as many children and families as possible! Hopefully next year!”
Running has been a source of strength for Jenny, helping her feel more prepared to support her son, who is autistic. Autism Hampshire has been there for her, offering guidance, support, and a community of people who understand. For Jenny, this run was about expressing gratitude and contributing to a cause close to her heart.
Laura, another dedicated runner, took on the challenge early. She said: “I managed to do my 10 miles at 6am on Sunday before the worst of the weather kicked in and really enjoyed it.” Laura’s efforts paid off, raising an impressive £400 for Autism Hampshire.
Our third runner was Jason who had prepared so much, both physically and mentally. But he didn’t let that stop him.
“On Sunday evening I put on my running gear and ran, just ran until I could run no more. In 1 hour 56 minutes, I completed 10 miles in my own version of the Great South around the streets of Pompey,” he shared.
Jason's determination was driven by his commitment to those who had donated to his JustGiving page. “I also felt that I couldn't let the people who had donated to my JustGiving page down so this is another reason why I had to get out there!”
We are incredibly proud of all of our runners for their determination, resilience, and dedication to supporting Autism Hampshire.
Their combined efforts have helped raise vital funds, allowing us to continue providing essential services to autistic individuals and their families across Hampshire.
If you’d like to support Autism Hampshire and help us continue our work, please consider making a donation. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, makes a difference.
