Story banner introducing Richard our 2026 marathon runner

For Richard Walker, taking part in the London Marathon is about more than completing 26.2 miles — it’s about raising awareness, supporting families, and helping create more inclusive communities.

Originally from the Isle of Wight and now living in Portsmouth, Richard balances a busy life as a community organiser, part-time graphic designer, and father to two energetic boys. When he’s not working, you’ll

often find him enjoying the outdoors, live music, festivals, art, sport or heading off on adventures with his sons.

Now he’s preparing to take on one of the world’s most famous races — the London Marathon — for the very first time.

Taking on a world-famous challenge

Richard admits he loves a challenge, so when the opportunity came up to run the London Marathon while supporting Avenues and Autism Hampshire, he didn’t hesitate.

“I do love a challenge, so t

o have the opportunity to train for and take part in a world-famous event like the London Marathon while supporting these organisations is a real privilege.”

Although he’s completed half marathons before, this will be his first full marathon.

On race day, Richard is most looking forward to the incredible atmosphere.“Being part of such an inclusive event — from elite athletes to fun runners — and soaking up the London sights and atmosphere will be amazing.”

Like many runners, he knows the challenge will test him — especially if the weather decides to play its part. “Last year was unusually hot, so adapting to the conditions on the day could be the toughest part.”

A cause close to home

Richard’s decision to run for Avenues and Autism Hampshire is deeply personal.

Through his work coordinating Serendipity Community Groups, he is passionate about creating spaces where people can connect, share experiences and support one another. But his motivation also comes from his own family life.

“I have two sons who were both diagnosed as autistic at a young age, and they have faced — and continue to face — many challenges, as we have as parents too.”

Through his work and personal experience, Richard has seen how important understanding and support can be.

“Running for Avenues and Austism Hampshire gives me the opportunity to raise awareness about autism and hopefully increase understanding even more.”

Supporting people to thrive

For Richard, the work Avenues and Autism Hampshire does is about empowering people to live fuller lives.

“Supporting people to live active, independent lives means helping them build connections and access peer support. Through groups like our Serendipity Community Groups we can reduce isolation, improve confidence and help people realise their potential.”

He believes that creating inclusive, non-judgemental spaces is key to helping people thrive in their communities.

Training with determination

Training for his first marathon is well underway. Following a 16-week training plan, Richard has steadily been increasing his mileage despite some tough winter weather.

“Training is going well and I’m really enjoying it.”

For Richard, the simple rhythm of running is motivation enough - “I enjoy running so much that I don’t need extra incentives to go out, even on the coldest and wettest days.”

He’s also surprised himself by just how committed he’s been.

“I’m running more miles and more often

than ever before, even with a busy lifestyle.”

Running to make a difference

Knowing that his efforts can support others gives Richard an extra sense of purpose.

“It makes me feel very fortunate that I’m able to do something I enjoy that can help support others who may not be as fortunate.”

Every donation, he says, plays a part in challenging disadvantage and supporting the vital work of Avenues.

Richard has already seen fantastic support from friends, family and colleagues — and is even organising a fundraising quiz evening to bring people together and raise more funds for the cause.

Looking ahead to the finish line

When the big day arrives, Richard says he’ll be focused on reaching the finish — and maybe keeping an eye out for the person handing out the medals.

Crossing the finish line will represent more than personal achievement.

“It will be a realisation that I can actually run that far — and hopefully inspire me to take on even more challenges in the future.”

But above all, he wants his marathon to help make a difference.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me so far. It inspires me to go out on every training run, whatever the weather, and work towards what will be a massively exciting day in London.”
