A new chapter of independence in Fareham

Supported living accommodation in Fareham

Last year, Autism Hampshire opened a brand-new supported living service in Fareham, offering nine self-contained flats.

The modern development was designed to promote independence and choice for the residents – a mix of autistic people and those with learning disabilities.

Previously, many residents lived in homes where they had their own rooms but shared communal spaces like kitchens and living rooms. Now, each person has their own flat - giving them privacy, independence, and a place to truly call their own.

With support workers on hand to provide tailored assistance based on each resident’s needs, residents have made countless improvements since they moved in.

Ben Latona, Service Manager, shared how transformative the move has been. He said “They all have a mix of independent life skills now - cleaning, cooking, budgeting. Some people manage their own medication and finances, while others receive more intensive support, including one resident who has 2-to-1 care.

“The majority of people have loved it and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. When you speak to them, they are happy. If they’re happy, we’re doing our job.”

From help with medication and finances to developing life skills like cooking, cleaning, and budgeting, the team ensures everyone has the support they need to thrive.

The Fareham flats also include a communal space downstairs, where residents come together for special occasions.

Halloween was a recent highlight, with everyone enjoying the chance to celebrate and connect.

Anthony Udoh, one of the team members at Fareham, shared his experience of supporting residents through their journey toward independence.

He said: “We’ve seen so much progress. One resident used to rely on others for everything, but now she makes her bed, washes her dishes, and cleans her room. You can see the joy in her face - that makes us feel fulfilled.

“And then there’s Rhi. Despite her disability, she shows incredible ability. She washes her plates, mops the floor, takes out the bin, does her laundry, and even helps clean the toilet.

“She’s always cheerful and brings joy to everyone around her. There’s no way you can work with Rhi and not feel uplifted - she makes your day.

“Being a support worker is one of the greatest things you can do. You’re helping people gain confidence, understand themselves, and become part of the community.”
